In the Limari Valley, Merino winery produces one of the silkiest syrahs I’ve tasted in a long time. J. Bouchon produces energetic Bordeaux-style reds from vineyards along the Maule River in central Chile. Chardonnay lovers should seek out the electrifying Sol de Sol, made by Aquitania winery from grapes grown on steep slopes in Malleco Valley, Chile’s southernmost new wine region.

Molson Coors Brewing Company established its U.S. headquarters in Denver in 2005. Its subsidiary and regional wholesale distributor, Coors Distributing Company, is in NW Denver. The Newmont Mining Corporation, the second-largest gold producer in North America and one of the largest in the world, is headquartered in Denver. MapQuest, an online site for maps, directions and business listings, is headquartered in Denver's LoDo district.

These winemakers are not afraid to take chances. Clos des Fous, or “Vineyard of Fools,” is the project of four friends determined to explore high-altitude viticulture. “I think we earned the name when we started going up in the mountains and planting vines without irrigation,” said Francisco “Paco” Leyton, 36, the quartet’s winemaker. “People said we were crazy.”
How different soils make for different styles of Chilean carmenere: “Where you stand on carmenere depends on where you sit. Younger soils, alluvial soils, tend to produce simple wines with less complexity of tannins. Wines from ancient mother-rock soils — soils like limestone, schist or granite — are quite different. Add to this a winemaking tradition based on French grape varieties and winemaking techniques, and you have a winning combination. High quality wines can be made inexpensively, which Concha y Toro successfully demonstrated with the release of its Casillero el Diablo wines in 1963.
